Battery packs powering commercial-grade
uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems have a life span which varies depending
on the number and depth of deplete/ recharge cycles they experience.
In South Africa, where regular power outages
are common, the batteries of legacy UPS systems are most vulnerable, not being
designed to cope
with ‘load-shedding’. Instead, they are intended to form
part of the brief backup routine for sensitive equipment, such as computers, during
which petrol/diesel generators take over or operators execute a quick but safe
power-down.
A period
