Update your UPS system. Retro-fit a long-run battery pack with unprecedented 3-year guarantee

Update your UPS system. Retro-fit a long-run battery pack with unprecedented 3-year guarantee

By Jack Ward, MD of Powermode

Battery packs powering commercial-grade uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems have a life span which varies depending on the number and depth of deplete/ recharge cycles they experience.

In South Africa, where regular power outages are common, the batteries of legacy UPS systems are most vulnerable, not being designed to cope with ‘load-shedding’. Instead, they are intended to form part of the brief backup routine for sensitive equipment, such as computers, during which petrol/diesel generators take over or operators execute a quick but safe power-down.

A period of load shedding, usually ranging from two to four hours, can fully deplete a battery pack. If repeated often enough, the batteries’ life can be reduced to around six months or less.

For owners of existing UPS systems, a solution to this costly problem is now available. It’s the recently-launched Q-on Long Run Battery Pack which is designed to be retro-fitted to most UPS systems.

Unprecedented on-site guarantee

The most significant feature of the Powermode-supplied Q-on LR Battery Pack is its comprehensive three-year, on-site guarantee – a ‘first’ for the industry and for a retro-fitted or replaced UPS component.

Underpinning Powermode’s unprecedented guarantee is the ‘smart’ technology built into the pack. This includes a battery balancing/equalising harness that automatically monitors and reports - via a ‘cloud-based’ GSM cell-phone portal to the Powermode Management Centre - on a range of parameters associated with individual batteries in the pack.

Data streams containing information critical to the well-being of individual batteries, including temperature, state of charge and depth of discharge are monitored and a tally of the number of discharge/charge cycles is recorded.

Boost to ROI
As the growing number of Q-on-equipped and serviced data centres confirm, the key to battery longevity lies in a thorough understanding of the status of batteries in terms of their duty cycles and load factors.

In addition to an ROI boost, this knowledge gives data centre executives the peace-of-mind that comes with having Powermode in charge of the management and regular servicing of their Q-on LR Battery Packs. Should an individual battery’s performance not meet design specifications or fail for any reason it is replaced immediately by Powermode whose support teams operate on a country-wide basis.

Importantly, the incremental investment in a Q-on LR Battery Pack is more than offset by the savings associated with the escalating costs of early battery replacement due to over-cycling or through a malfunction of any kind.
