Now, backup power for retailers

Now, backup power for retailers

By Jack Ward, MD of Powermode

Undoubtedly, retailers have been among the hardest hit by load-shedding and power outages. I’m talking about grocery shops, food producers, fast food restaurants, retail chain stores and the like who are all feeling the effects of South Africa’s power crisis where it’s most damaging – on the bottom line.

Lost trading hours and wasted food are among the biggest concerns emanating from the rolling power blackouts afflicting the country. Sadly, the situation can be expected to worsen.

It begs the question – how are retailers expected to address payment problems at their cash registers when scanners, card readers and receipt printers are unable to function?

If there is any light at the end of the tunnel, it comes in the form of a new, purpose-designed backup power solution aimed at resolving check-out counter and point-of-sale issues during power outages.

Dubbed the Q-on POSpower, it is a modular solution available in three basic models – 3, 6 and 10kVA options - offering run times of between four and six hours.

Being modular, the units can be linked together to build long-run power supply systems capable of tackling almost any challenge. Each module comes complete with its own battery-pack and charger.

Key features of the newly-released units from Powermode include a small foot-print, allowing them to be positioned close to the check-out islands.

Importantly, the Q-on POSpower is designed to cope with long power outages unlike conventional uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems that provide standby, back-up power for only short periods of time.

What’s more, the Q-on POSpower is able to complement and even replace conventional generators in point-of-sale applications. As many retailers have found, generators are unable to immediately restore power to the cash registers when load-shedding occurs.

This causes all tills to power down and then re-boot when the generator comes up to power. This can result in shoppers abandoning their trolleys and leaving the store during the often lengthy wait in darkness. With the Q-on POSpower switch-over is seamless.

The Q-on POSpower gives South African retailers the opportunity to invest in an appropriate, modular standby power solution able to be configured to meet all demands.
